Today the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI will resign on 28 February 2013 due to poor health conditions. He’s the first Pope to abdicate since Gregory XII in 1415. Benedict XVI was elected on 19 April 2005. He served as the head of the Vatican for almost 8 years, which is not a long period compared to his predecessor Pope John Paul II, who is listed second on the list of longest reigning popes.
